Loyle Carner「HGU」の和訳・解説記事です。
マーキュリー賞ノミネートの経験を持ち、Tom Mischとのコラボでも有名なイギリスのラッパーLoyle Carner。
21歳でのデビューEP「A Little Late」(2014)から恋人との別れ、継父の死と一貫しとてもパーソナルなテーマをラップしてきたLoyle。
2022年10月にリリースされたの3rdアルバム「Hugo」では白人と黒人のミックスであること、父親になること、生まれてすぐに出て行った黒人の実父との関係、イギリスで多発するナイフを使った犯罪問題について歌ってます。
「Hugo」ラストを締めくくる曲「HGU」は、白人の母親と継父に育てられたLoyleが生まれてすぐに出て行った黒人の父との関係の再構築と”子を捨てる父親”のサイクルを自分の代で止める決意を歌った曲。
「I forgive you, I forgive you, I forgive you」と感情が溢れ出す冒頭の声が印象的です。
中盤のチェスのメタファーもポップソングには珍しい歌詞ではないでしょうか。
タイトル「HGU」はロックダウン中にLoyleに運転を教えた実父の車のナンバープレートから取られたそう。
過去作で継父と母の声をサンプリングしてきたLoyleが初めて実父の声を使った作品です。
トラックはイギリスのビートメイカーzentoが”Loyle Carner type beat”として2018年にアップしていた”Summer Evening”を使用。
“Type beat”の本人購入ってあるんですね。
早朝から流すと一日爽やかに過ごせそうな心地の良いトラックとエモーショナルなLoyleのフロウが素晴らしいケミストリーを起こした一曲です。
